getting him there means nothing...you got to do something
Speech and Language improvement is not an isolated event…. not something that happens only in the therapy room…speech articulation oral motor habit change and functional language skills cannot be purchased/injected/medicated/massaged or stimulated by anything other than the individual and those in their immediate environment. If your child has an ear problem you take him to the doctor and the doc gives a shot and the problem goes away…just get Billy into the waiting room and you can get a healing. Mom does not have to participate other than drive and pay. BUT when you cannot talk…mom and dad must participate if any real change is to occur…. this can be a big shock to parents of profoundly disabled after all the “professionals” get done with their smooth sales pitches. The more you think the therapist will fix the problem the less will really happen…get them to the dentist and the teeth get fixed…. the reality is it is a wee bit more involved to get Billy to improve the Range of Motion of the posterior of his tongue…or for grandma to maintain focus and quality auditory memory necessary for oral communications…it is a team effort…along with unconditional love.
